As reported on the Summit Metro Parks Facebook page. Just two weeks after vandals destroyed a section of the TowPath Trail bridge by Wilbeth Road Summit Metro Parks reopened the trail with a temporary bypass.
The trail had been closed since Tuesday, April 19, when the fire was intentionally set. About 40 feet of a floating bridge were destroyed. District officials are working with the City of Akron on a permanent replacement, which is estimated to cost between $75,000 and $90,000. The bridge was not insured. Summit Metro Parks will contribute $10,000 toward the rebuild. A crowdfunding effort by the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition has raised more than $2,200. Contributions may be made by calling 330-374-5657 or pledging online at https://www.crowdrise.com/towpath-trail-floating-bridge-repair. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the park district’s administrative offices at 330-867-5511.
R-D Bike Shop will again be providing support for the First Merit TowPath Century Ride that is scheduled for next Saturday, May 14, many brows are being wiped in relief with the opening of this temporary bypass.
